The Economics of Electronics Industry: Competitive Dynamics and Industrial Organization
This entry highlights fundamental changes in the electronics industry that have transformed its competitive dynamics and industrial organization: a high and growing knowledge intensity; the rapid pace of change in technologies and markets; and extensive globalization. That explosive mixture of forces has created two inter-related puzzles. The first puzzle is that a high degree of globalization may well go hand in hand with high and increasing concentration. This runs counter to the dominant view, based on the assumption of neo-classical trade theory, that globalization will increase competition and hence will act as a powerful equalizer both among nations and among firms. Multinational corporations, after all, may not be such effective "spoilers of concentration", as claimed by Richard Caves (1982). The second related puzzle is that this industry fails to act like a stable global oligopoly, even when concentration is extremely high: a market positions are highly volatile, new entry is possible, and not even market leaders can count on a guaranteed survival.
Jam To-morrow and Jam Yesterday, but Never Jam To-day: The of Theology Libraries Planning the Twenty-first Century
The future of theology libraries is far from clear. Since the nineteenth century, theology libraries have evolved to support the work of theological education. This article briefly reviews the development of theology libraries in North America and examines the contextual changes impacting theology libraries today. Three significant factors that will shape theology libraries in the coming decade are collaborative models of pedagogy and scholarship, globalization and rapid changes in information technology, and changes in the nature of scholarly publishing including the digitization of information. A large body of research is available to assist those responsible for guiding the direction of theology libraries in the next decade, but there are significant gaps in what we know about the impact of technology on how people use information that must be filled in order to provide a solid foundation for planning
Discourses on ICT and development.
Research on ICT and development (ICTD) involves assumptions on the nature of ICT innovation and on the way such innovation contributes to development. In this article I review the multidisciplinary literature on ICTD and identify two perspectives regarding the nature of the ICT innovation process in developing countries - as transfer and diffusion and as socially embedded action - and two perspectives on the development transformation towards which ICT is understood to contribute - progressive transformation and disruptive transformation. I then discuss the four discourses formed by combining the perspectives on the nature of IS innovation and on the development transformation. My review suggests that ICTD research, despite its remarkable theoretical capabilities to study technology innovation in relation to socio-economic context, remains weak in forming convincing arguments on IT-enabled socio-economic development.
Technology, governance, and a sustainability model for small and medium-sized towns in Europe
New and cutting-edge technologies causing deep changes in societies, playing the role
of game modifiers, and having a significant impact on global markets in small and medium-sized
towns in Europe (SMSTEs) are the focus of this research. In this context, an analysis was carried
out to identify the main dimensions of a model for promoting innovation in SMSTEs. The literature
review on the main dimensions boosting the innovation in SMSTEs and the methodological approach
was the application of a survey directed to experts on this issue. The findings from the literature
review reflect that technologies, governance, and sustainability dimensions are enablers of SMSTEsâ
innovation, and based on the results of the survey, a model was implemented to boost innovation,

The M and A transactions represent a wide range of unique business
optimization opportunities in the corporate transformation deals, which are
usually characterized by the high level of total risk. The M and A transactions
can be successfully implemented by taking to an account the size of
investments, purchase price, direction of transaction, type of transaction, and
using the modern comparable transactions analysis and the business valuation
techniques in the diffusion type financial systems in the finances. We
developed the MicroMA software program with the embedded optimized
near-real-time artificial intelligence algorithm to create the winning virtuous
M and A strategies, using the financial performance characteristics of the
involved firms, and to estimate the probability of the M and A transaction
completion success. We believe that the fluctuating dependence of M and A
transactions number over the certain time period is quasi periodic. We think
that there are many factors, which can generate the quasi periodic oscillations
of the M and A transactions number in the time domain, for example: the stock
market bubble effects. We performed the research of the nonlinearities in the M
and A transactions number quasi-periodic oscillations in Matlab, including the
ideal, linear, quadratic, and exponential dependences. We discovered that the
average of a sum of random numbers in the M and A transactions time series
represents a time series with the quasi periodic systematic oscillations, which
can be finely approximated by the polynomial numbers. We think that, in the
course of the M and A transaction implementation, the ability by the companies
to absorb the newly acquired knowledge and to create the new innovative
knowledge bases, is a key predeterminant of the M and A deal completion success

Late Innovation Strategies in Asian Electronics Industries: A Conceptual Framework and Illustrative Evidence
This paper was published in Oxford Development Studies special issue in honor of the late Professor Linsu Kim. The paper reviews evidence on the evolution of electronics design in Asia's leading electronics exporting countries, to establish what capabilities have been developed, and to shed light on the forces that are driving "late innovation" strategies. It also reviews intellectual sources that can be used to theoretically ground these hypotheses. Using a well-known taxonomy of innovation that distinguishes incremental, modular, architectural and radical innovations, and the concept of "disruptive technologies", I argue that Asian firms may have realistic chances to engage in incremental innovations as well as in architectural innovations. However, to sustain "late innovation" strategies over a longer period, "complex system integration" capabilities are necessary to provide the missing link.
Innovation, Venture Capital and Globalization: the Role of Public Policies
Creating more innovative and dynamic economies is one of the fundamental challenges facing both advanced and emerging market economies. An important ingredient of this involves the creation of entrepreneurial firms which can quickly translate creative ideas and scientific discoveries into viable products. These firms, however, need financing because it takes time and money to turn ideas into marketable products. However, investing in these types of activities is risky as a lot of new ideas simply donât work out in practice. Because of these risks, banks tend to avoid lending to these types of firms. There is, however, a small segment of the financial sector referred to as the venture capital market that specializes in finding and developing these entrepreneurial businesses. This paper provides an overview of this important financial sector and concludes that public policies have historically been quite important in nurturing a venture capital industry as it is an area characterized by numerous market imperfections. From these experiences some lessons are drawn as to what actions governments can take to overcome the obstacles in establishing a venture capital market which can adequately finance dynamic new companies. It is also emphasized that although obtaining finance is often a significant constraint it is nevertheless just as important to ensure that the other ingredients for entrepreneurship are also present; these include a proper regulatory and legal framework including protections for intellectual property, low start-up costs with minimum paper work, a favourable tax regime, and a well-educated workforce. The telecommunications business is undergoing a critical revolution, driven by innovative technologies, globalization, and deregulation. Cellular networks and telecommunications bring radical changes to the way telecom businesses are conducted. Globalization, on the other hand, is tearing down legacy barriers and forcing monopolistic national carriers to compete internationally.
